A friend recently got dental crowns. Now you are wondering if they would help you resolve a dental issue. Crowns are used for a number of conditions. By talking with your dentist, it’s possible to learn a little about crowns and what they accomplish.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are basically a cap that’s placed on the top of a damaged tooth. The size and shape of the crown depends on the type of tooth and the amount of damage present. Crowns are custom made so they are proportioned properly and restore the strength and appearance of the tooth. Many dental clinics prepare the crowns in-house, using measurements and other data collected during the patient examination.

What Materials are Used for the Crowns?

Four materials are historically used for crowns: porcelain-based ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, gold alloy, or base metal alloys. Your dentist can help you explore the merits of each material and recommend the one that’s best for you. For example, if you would prefer to have a crown that looks more like the rest of the tooth, one of the solutions using porcelain would be a good choice. Others may find that some type of metal alloy is more to their liking.

What Conditions Do They Correct?

Your Markham family dentist will point out several issues that are helped by crowns. They are sometimes paired with veneers to add strength to cracked teeth. Crowns fill in chipped areas along the top of teeth. They can help cover a discolored tooth, allowing it to blend in with the surrounding teeth.

Crowns also help reshape teeth that look awkward and make the smile more uniform. That same reshaping can also make it easier to chew properly. If you have a cavity filled, the dentist may recommend adding a crown over the filling. This helps restore the appearance of the tooth and also provides a measure of protection to the filling.

Does Getting a Crown Hurt?

Some type of local anesthetic is typically used for the installation of a crown. You are likely to feel no discomfort during the procedure. Afterwards, there may be some soreness. Many patients find that rinsing with warm salt water and using the over the counter anti-inflammatory recommended by the dentist is enough to deal with the pain. You can expect any discomfort to disappear by the following day.

How Long Will They Last?

Tooth crowns in Markham are formulated to last for a long time. They may eventually need to be replaced if used in conjunction with fillings. That’s because more of the tooth may decay over time, dislodging the filling and the existing crown. Generally, you can depend on a crown to remain viable for at least 15 years. Under certain conditions, the crowns could last much longer.

Are dental crowns right for you? The only way to know for sure is to talk with your dentist. Depending on what type of condition you want to correct and how you would like the teeth to look afterwards, crowns may be an important part of the solution.

There is an ample parking space before you get into the office. The receptionists welcome us friendly with proper COVID-19 procedures in place. The staff worked with patient very patiently and professionally. My teeth cleaning was done by Ying, she explained every detail to me and I did not feel any pain or uncomfortable at all. It's been a while since I've been to a dentist but I'm trying to get back on track with health in general. Overall it was great going to Markham Smile Centre! The receptionist (I believe she was Kim) was friendly. The hygienist, Ying, was attentive and gentle during the cleaning; x-ray tech (forgot her name, sorry!) was great too. Dr. Sara Riad explained things with good detail. Looking forward to going back!

The clinic was clean and the staff was very polite. I particularly liked the fact that everything was explained to me before going in for the procedure so I knew what to expect at each step. The dental hygienist who did the cleaning for me was also very gentle and took my concerns into consideration. I will definitely recommend them.

Upon arriving to the Markham Smile Centre, my son and I were greeted with a warm welcome by the receptionists. The hygienists and Dentist were very gentle and transparent with what they were doing. The hygienist that worked on my 9 year old son was patient and very friendly with him, which helped ease his nerves. Our overall experience was A+.

Since I was little, I have always hated going to the dentist... Its always uncomfortable and unpleasant. These days, visiting the dentist isn’t so bad! Dr Jason, Rory, and the lovely staff at reception make the experience 100x better. I have had absolutely no issues with the gum graft and cleanings that I’ve gotten done here. Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful, even when I’m calling in or emailing a hundred questions :). I would highly recommend Markham Smile Centre.
